We’ve embedded the skills from my medical recruitment background into the Kowalah interview process
— Candy Cowan - Co-Founder

Kowalah is a mobile app that helps parents find, book and pay for on demand childcare.  We connect parents with local Kowalahs who provide daytime childcare, evening sitting, and even overnight stays.

Kowalah currently covers all of Gloucestershire, with areas of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Worcerstershire.

Kowalah was founded in 2016 by Candy Cowan.  Candy is a mum of four and knows exactly what it's like to need to be in four places at the same time.  When the family moved to a new area in 2015 Candy needed childcare help fast, and with no existing network to call on the idea of Kowalah was born.

Candy completed a MSc in Biokinetics specialising in ergonomics from University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa before moving to the UK.

Candy then led the Occupational Health practice at Honda's factory in Swindon, helping workers, HR, doctors and legal teams to ensure employees were fit to work, safe and applied to the right roles.  Candy and her team were instrumental in the recruiting and onboarding processes at the Honda factory.

As parents we know that trust and safety are critical when you are asking anyone else to look after your children.  Candy and the Kowalah team have built a rigorous interview process incorporating much of Candy's health and safety and medical background that means we only accept Kowalahs that we'd be prepared to have look after our own children.
