Why is it so important a Kowalah has a car?
At Kowalah we interview every single sitter (Kowalah) before they are allowed to go on the platform and accept bookings from parents. One of our main questions is how the potential Kowalah expects to get to and from their bookings. Kowalah covers a range of towns and rural areas and we believe it is critical for Kowalahs to be able to get to and from their booking independently.
Delivering a seamless service
When parents use Kowalah they expect a seamless service. Their Kowalah should arrive at their house on time (normally 10 minutes early), deliver a great experience, and then disappear within minutes of their return.
The seamless service is disrupted if the Kowalah is relying on mum or dad to pick them up, a friend waiting in a car outside, a 15-minute awkward chat while waiting for a taxi, or worse still needing the newly returned parents to give them a lift home.
To avoid this, in rural areas we're specifically looking for Kowalahs that have their own driving licence and car - they can go wherever they need whenever they want. This gives us confidence not only that they can get out of the parent's house promptly, but we also know when they are on late night bookings that at 2am they can get home safely.
In urban areas our question is a bit more open, "how will you independently get to and from bookings?" They may only be accepting hyper-local bookings and cycling, they may be uber-ing - but we dig into this response to ensure the customer gets the Kowalah service they expect and at no point feels responsible for how their Kowalah gets home.
Driving during a booking
There is often more driving involved than just getting to and from a booking! 50% of Kowalah bookings are for daytime help, and these may include a school pick-up, or taking the kids to a friend's party. By having their own transport listed on their profile Kowalahs are able to pick up more bookings of this nature.
It's important to note that Kowalahs that do provide additional services like this need to ensure they have informed their car insurer (there may be an additional fee), or, if using the parent's own car, that the parents have adequate insurance to allow additional drivers. Where a Kowalah uses their own vehicle during a booking we also charge mileage to compensate the Kowalah.
Transport is just one of the aspects we focus on during the interview with a potential Kowalah sitter, but its a critical one to delivering the end to end Kowalah service our customers have come to depend on.
