7 ways to speed up your Kowalah application!

Becoming a Kowalah can be one of the most rewarding and flexible ways of earning money around your other commitments. It is not just a job for those with 15 years of childminding or nannying experience behind them - in fact feedback from all the children is that they just want someone who is fun, who engages with them and has some funny stories to tell!

Becoming a Kowalah is therefore open to anyone and we’re proud that the majority of those joining the platform would not have considered themselves a childcare provider before Kowalah. We have mums who are looking to return to work but with very flexible hours, we have grandmothers who are looking to continue to help out in their local area, and we have plenty of uni students who are looking to earn money quickly for those important social functions!

Whilst Kowalah is expanding fast, the quality of every single Kowalah on the platform is paramount - every child and every parent should receive an amazing experience and for this reason we provide a detailed onboarding process to ensure Kowalah is right for you, and that you are right for Kowalah.

Preparing up front can have you live on Kowalah in days.

Preparing up front can have you live on Kowalah in days.

From application to being live in the platform averages two weeks, but can be as little as a few days if you are prepared with the information below. Here are our tips for successfully speeding up your application:

1 - Book your introductory call

Once you have signed up at www.kowalah.com you will receive an email asking you to book an introductory call with one of Team Kowalah. Pick a time that works for you and we’ll ring you at the allotted time. Currently we are able to speak with you with between 3 and 5 working days notice.

2 - Prepare for your call

In your 20 minute call we’ll explain a bit more about how Kowalah works, but importantly we’re also looking to hear more about yourself. We are looking at how you present yourself, are you confident, do you have questions for us about Kowalah? We are looking at timeliness - were you available for the call you booked or did you reschedule? We are looking for some prior babysitting or childcare experience - perhaps you are a parent yourself, or have done babysitting for local family’s children - be specific. Do you have any first aid training via school or work? Let us know what else you think supports your application!

3 - Request a Basic DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)

The Disclosure and Barring Service is a government run service that checks all police systems to confirm whether you have any prior convictions that might affect your ability to look after children. The Basic check can be requested by yourself for £25 from the UK Government Website. To apply for this you will need all your addresses for the last 5 years and the dates you lived there, your National Insurance number, your passport, and your driving licence.

4 - Return your documents

If your introductory call is successful we will send you a Kowalah Onboarding Form. This will take around 20 minutes to complete and will ask you to add in the details of two references for previous babysitting or childcare experience as well as your proof of address, identify documents and DBS documents.

5 - Prepare your references

Whilst ID documents and DBS are useful documents, nothing is more important to us than two people who will gush good stories about how you have looked after their children and who would wholeheartedly recommend you. These references become your first two reviews on the Kowalah platform and are critical to helping you get your first bookings.

Let your references know that Kowalah will be contacting them directly and to ask them to quickly respond with their feedback. Slow references are the biggest delay to getting you live on the platform.

6 - Prepare your About Me section

In the Onboarding Form we we also ask you to write your profile for Kowalah. This will be shown to parents when you accept a booking request. In just 1000 characters you have the chance to sell yourself. Bring out your personality, talk about the activities or games you like to play. Mention which school you went to or what uni course you are doing. Why would a family choose you over another Kowalah?

7 - Ask a friend to take a Profile Photo

Your photo is probably the biggest factor over who gets chosen for a booking - over and above your About Me profile. In many households the kids themselves have the deciding vote and they are looking for a smiling warm face!

Don’t find a group photo from last year’s holiday to Corfu and crop into your face! Ask a friend to take a photo of you - any modern smartphone is going to have some awesome profile photo tools, so set yourself up in front of a clean wall and take a few to get the best shot. “Cheeeeeeeese!!"“ 10 minutes spent on this alone will dramatically increase your bookings.

And you are live!

Once we have received all your documents, both your references have come back positively and you have your About Me and photo ready in Kowalah then you go live and can start accepting Booking Requests and earning.

Whilst we have a few steps to go through, if you prepare for each of these up front you can be live in the platform in just a few days.

We hope this helps you to prepare for the Kowalah application process and we look forward to welcoming you to the platform! There is plenty more information and support on our Help Centre.
