Top Child Friendly Pubs in Oxford

Having a family is a hugely rewarding experience but it can also come with its own challenges! One of those can be trying to go out for a meal or a drink with the full family! Where pre-children you might have enjoyed the opportunity to sit and relax, contemplate the week ahead or engage in some people watching now the apple juices get downed in 15 seconds, a glass of milk goes flying across the table and onto the floor, chairs are rocked on back and forth and you and your partner only speak as you pass on trips to and from the loos!

But help is at hand!! Amelia, Kowalah’s Ambassador for Oxford has been on the hunt to find the best family friendly pubs in Oxford! Amelia put the word out on social media and received great recommendations from local families. We went to visit each of these and we hope you love them as much as we did!

(We are on the hunt for more great pubs to add to our list - so if we’ve missed your favourite let us know in the comments below!)

The Jolly Postboys

The Jolly Postboys opened in 2016 to serve the great people of East Oxford. The owners have set out to build a great community pub and families are definitely welcome! Food is served from Tuesday to Sunday with bustling Sunday lunches from 12pm until 4pm!

On our visit we found the pub to be really family friendly with a toy and book corner to entertain the little ones before and after your meal.

The pub is really keen to encourage families mid-week and puts on what they delighfully call “After School Pub” offering arts and crafts for the kids and a pint for the parents - a nice change to the coffee shop chat at school drop off!

We think the Jolly Postboys makes a great place to hide from the upcoming winter weather!

The Rusty Bicyle

Also based in East Oxford, The Rusty Bicycle opened in 2009 and is the first in a line of four cracking pubs run by the Dodo Pub Company, with two other pubs in Oxford, one in Cheltenham and a first pub in Reading opening soon.

The restaurant has a dedicated children’s menu with plenty of colouring in to be completed while the adults relax into reading an adult menu stuffed with filling burgers and pizzas.

When we visited we particularly liked the kid’s games and some naughty free sweeties to keep the little ones on side!

Depending on the ages of your children you may also love the Pop Up Cinema that the pub group have been running over the Summer at their sister pub The Up In Arms on Marston Road. On the 15th September Mama Mia is showing, but earlier in the Summer Up, Back to the Future and Matilda have been screened.

The Rusty Bicycle was recommended to us a number of times and we think it makes a great family pub with a young atmosphere.

The Magdalen Arms

Based on the Iffley Road the Magdalen Arms is geared up for young kids with a cracking kids menu for £7.50 including drinks and an icecream! The menu changes daily which keeps things interesting for the repeat visitor!

When we visited we saw a great selection of games, books and building blocks to keep the children entertained while you have some adult chat!

We also saw a nice contained outside area for little ones to play in once they’ve finished while you enjoy the rest of your meal.

(We couldn’t find a live website for the pub but will update when it comes online)

The Butchers Arms

Our final recomendation took us to Headington to The Butchers Arms, a Fuller’s pub tucked away down a side street. We found a fantastic selection of games for kids of all ages, from cards and dominos and even darts for the teenagers!

Whilst there wasn’t a specific children’s menu the pub were very happy to provide smaller portions for your little ones. Good pub fare is served along side classic ales and wines - perfect for a weekend lunch.

As the sun continues to push through in the Autumn we think you’ll like the outside area where there is plenty of seating and space for the kids to stretch their legs!
